AHCSS00075 Basic Beekeeping Skill Set
Participation – Work Readiness Program(Ideal for people who are currently unemployed, under-employed, or looking for work)


Course Details
This skill set provides the foundational knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely manage a beehive or small apiary. It’s a great starting point for anyone interested in beekeeping – whether as a hobby, a pathway to further training, or future work in agriculture or sustainability.
The course includes six nationally recognised units of competency, covering basic beekeeping skills and topics such as:

Beekeeping equipment and safety

Hive inspection and maintenance

Honeybee health and behaviour
-
Sustainable work practices
Upon completion, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment, and the units can be credited toward the Certificate III in Beekeeping if you choose to continue your training.

Course Duration
This course is delivered face-to-face at Yanchep Institute and includes both theory classes and hands-on practical workshops.
Learners are required to attend four days per week over a four-week period (16 days in total).
Yanchep Institute runs this course on an ongoing basis, subject to reaching the minimum number of enrolled students.

Course Eligibility
To enrol in the Basic Beekeeping Skillset (AHCSS00075) under the Participation – Work Readiness Program, learners must meet the following eligibility criteria:

You are unemployed or under-employed

You are able to access mainstream training
-
You are looking to build hands-on skills in a practical, supportive environment

Job Agency Referrals
If you are working with a Workforce Australia provider, DES provider, or Jobs & Skills Centre, your case manager can refer you by providing a written referral.

Referred from Another Agency
Support organisations such as youth agencies, community groups, or local services are welcome to refer participants directly.
We’re happy to support you and your client with the enrolment process.
Resources and PPE
Learners are required to purchase or have access to the Australian Beekeeping Manual (cost approx. $45) as well as have access to the Australian Beekeeping Guide which can be accessed and downloaded to print free of charge from this link.
Learners will be provided use of PPE such as beekeeper suits, veils and gloves however the learner is to provide and wear closed in shoes.


Units of Competency
There are six units of competency within this Skill Set:
- AHCBEK203 Open and reassemble a bee hive
- AHCBEK205 Prepare and use a bee smoker
- AHCBEK206 Assemble and maintain beekeeping components
- AHCBEK302 Manipulate honey bee brood
- AHCBEK304 Remove a honey crop from a hive
- AHCBEK313 Manage pests and disease within a honey bee colony

Indicative Fees and Charges:
- Non- concession learners $805.20 (capped at $420 for school aged learners not enrolled in school)
- Concession learners $242.55
N.B. The fees quoted are estimates only and are for all units in the course for learners enrolling on a full-time basis.

Concessions on Courses
Eligibility for the concession rate on course fees is determined at the time of enrolment. The following students are entitled to the concession rate on course fees:
1. Persons and dependants of persons holding:
- a Pensioner Concession Card;
- a Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs; or
- a Health Care Card.
2. Persons and dependants of persons in receipt of services from the following Commonwealth support or employment services programs:
- Workforce Australia; or
- Parents Next.
3. Persons and dependants of persons in receipt of AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY.
4. Persons and dependants of persons in receipt of the Youth Allowance.
5. Persons and dependants of persons who are inmates of a custodial institution.
6. Secondary school-aged persons, not enrolled at school.
The Student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as resource fees and other fees. These must be charged in accordance with the VET Fees and Charges Policy.
