Cert III Business School-Based Traineeship – Course Overview
This qualification is designed for school-based trainees seeking to develop their skills and establish their performance in a range of Business Services roles. It provides a pathway for those beginning their careers or building on existing experience in a professional environment.
Participants will engage in a variety of tasks, including routine office procedures, clerical duties, administrative functions, and operational activities. The program emphasizes practical application of business and technology skills, supported by a solid understanding of relevant theoretical concepts.
This qualification also focuses on enhancing decision-making, judgment, and initiative in the workplace. In some cases, participants may provide technical advice and support to team members, further building their professional competencies.
Access to a working office environment or a simulated office setup is essential, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a practical, hands-on setting.
This program offers a well-rounded foundation for those aiming to succeed in a variety of business services roles.

A school-based traineeship lets you combine classroom learning with on-the-job training in your chosen industry. You’ll work with an employer, learn practical skills, and even get paid for the time you spend at work. As part of the program, you’ll also complete a nationally recognised qualification through a registered training organisation (RTO) such as Yanchep Institute.

Study and Work Commitments
As a SBT (School-Based Trainee), you will balance work, training, and school commitments. You are required to complete at least 7.5 hours of paid work per week with the employer listed in your training contract. This minimum requirement applies throughout the entire duration of your SBT, including school holidays.
The hours can be averaged over a six-month period to offer flexibility. For instance, you can work shorter shifts or longer blocks of full-time hours, as long as the total averages 7.5 hours per week, which equates to 195 hours over six months.
In addition to working with your employer, you will attend a face-to-face class one day per week (can be on-line). The remaining days will be spent at school, where you will complete your Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
This structure ensures you gain practical work experience, develop skills through formal training, and continue progressing toward your educational goals.
