Course Details

This skill set provides the foundational knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely manage a beehive or small apiary. It’s a great starting point for anyone interested in beekeeping – whether as a hobby, a pathway to further training, or future work in agriculture or sustainability.

The course includes six nationally recognised units of competency, covering basic beekeeping skills and topics such as:

  • Beekeeping equipment and safety

  • Hive inspection and maintenance

  • Honeybee health and behaviour

  • Sustainable work practices

Upon completion, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment, and the units can be credited toward the Certificate III in Beekeeping if you choose to continue your training.

Course Location & Duration

 

This course is delivered face-to-face at Yanchep Institute and includes both theory classes and hands-on practical workshops.
Learners are required to attend for sixteen days in total.

Yanchep Institute runs this course on an ongoing basis, subject to reaching the minimum number of enrolled students.

If you’re interested, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) at any time. Once enough EOIs are received to form a class, we will:

  • Contact you with the proposed course dates

  • Help you confirm eligibility and complete your enrolment

  • Allocate you to the next available intake

This flexible model ensures the course can be delivered frequently and locally to meet community demand.

Units of Competency

 

There are six units of competency within this Skill Set:

 

  • AHCBEK203 Open and reassemble a bee hive
  • AHCBEK205 Prepare and use a bee smoker
  • AHCBEK206 Assemble and maintain beekeeping components
  • AHCBEK302 Manipulate honey bee brood
  • AHCBEK304 Remove a honey crop from a hive
  • AHCBEK313 Manage pests and disease within a honey bee colony

Indicative Fees and Charges: non- concession learners $805.20 (capped at $420 for school aged learners not enrolled in school). Learners may elect to be invoiced per unit upfront.

The Student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as resource fees and other fees. These must be charged in accordance with the VET Fees and Charges Policy.
